🏆 Strategic Governance Takes Centre Stage As HYPREP Charts Next Phase Of Ogoni Cleanup

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has commenced a critical strategic review of the Ogoni cleanup programme as members of its Governing Council and Board of Trustees converged in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, for a high-level retreat focused on strengthening delivery, accountability, and sustainable environmental restoration.

The retreat, themed Strategic Governance for Sustainable Remediation of Oil-Impacted Environments, provides a platform for comprehensive assessment of remediation activities, community interventions, and institutional performance, as HYPREP enters a pivotal phase of implementation.

Presenting the project update, the HYPREP Project Coordinator, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, outlined progress across key pillars of the Ogoni cleanup mandate, including environmental remediation, potable water delivery, healthcare interventions, livelihood programmes, and community engagement initiatives.

According to the presentation, HYPREP has recorded measurable progress in site remediation, shoreline cleanup, mangrove restoration, and soil and groundwater recovery, reflecting steady technical advancement in restoring degraded environments across Ogoniland.

Prof. Zabbey also highlighted the scale of livelihood and sustainable development interventions, noting that thousands of direct jobs have been created, with extensive skills training for Ogoni youth and women, alongside the ongoing distribution of starter packs to trained beneficiaries. These programmes, he explained, are designed to ensure that environmental recovery is matched with economic empowerment and long-term community resilience.

On potable water and public health, the update detailed ongoing water infrastructure projects, remedial actions on affected facilities, and strengthened healthcare delivery, including upgraded health centres, ambulance deployment, and progress on major hospital projects serving Ogoni communities.

The retreat was attended by key members of the Federal Executive Council, including the Honourable Minister of Environment, Alhaji Balarabe Abbas Lawal; the Honourable Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, FNSE; the Honourable Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu; and the Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, underscoring the strong inter-ministerial commitment to the success of the Ogoni cleanup programme.

Engr. Abubakar Momoh commended the Ministry of Environment for its leadership and policy direction and praised HYPREP for the progress recorded so far, describing the presentations as comprehensive and encouraging. He urged that outcomes of the retreat be consolidated into a clear proposal and implementation framework to translate deliberations into structured action plans, timelines, and accountability mechanisms for the next phase of project delivery.

Discussions at the retreat further emphasized the importance of inter-agency coordination, sustained funding discipline, transparent reporting, and measurable delivery benchmarks to ensure that the benefits of the Ogoni cleanup are felt directly by affected communities.

The retreat forms part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to reposition the Ogoni cleanup programme as a results-driven, transparent, and sustainable environmental restoration initiative, anchored on strong governance and long-term community development.
