A video trending on social media shows the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, snubbing a handshake extended by the Alaafin of Oyo, Abimbola Owoade.

The incident took place during the 2026 interfaith gathering at the Grand Space, near the Oyo State House of Assembly. The clip captures Ladoja walking toward his seat beside the Alaafin, who was already seated. As Owoade reached out to greet him, the Olubadan deliberately ignored the gesture, causing the Alaafin to withdraw his hand.

In response, Ibadan traditional leaders criticized the Alaafin’s action, labeling it disrespectful to both the Olubadan and the Ibadan traditional institution. The statement, signed by monarchs, mogajis, baales, and other notable indigenes, emphasized that Ibadanland is not subordinate to the Alaafin and that offering a handshake to a seated Olubadan is insulting.

They urged Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to caution the Alaafin against what they described as “a series of uncultured behaviors” toward Ibadan’s traditional stools.

The statement concluded:
“The Alaafin’s disregard for the Olubadan stool and Ibadan traditions is escalating. If Governor Makinde fails to intervene, and Ibadan people—including mogajis, baales, and chiefs—are compelled to react against these insults, the responsibility will rest solely with the Oyo monarch.”
