Jigawa Police Arrest 17 Motorists In Traffic Law Enforcement Operation

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested 17 motorists for alleged violations of road traffic regulations as it commenced a special enforcement operation code-named Operation Velvet.

The arrests were made on Monday in Dutse Local Government Area as part of efforts to strengthen compliance with traffic laws, reduce road-related offences and accidents, and improve safety for motorists and other road users.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Police Public Relations Officer SP Lawan Shiisu Adam confirmed the development in a statement, explaining that the arrested motorists were allegedly involved in offences including the use of covered number plates, unauthorised tinted glass and overloading.

The affected motorists were reportedly taken through the appropriate legal process and charged before a competent court for prosecution.

The police command clarified that Operation Velvet was not intended to harass or inconvenience motorists who obey traffic regulations, but rather to encourage responsible driving and ensure strict compliance with established road safety rules.

Authorities said the enforcement exercise would be extended to major towns and cities across Jigawa State, warning that motorists who violate traffic laws would be apprehended and made to face the full consequences of the law.

The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State, CP Tijjani Murtala, urged motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle and motorcycle operators, as well as other road users, to obey traffic regulations and avoid reckless driving and other practices capable of endangering lives and property.

The police boss also appealed to residents to support the operation by providing credible information about persistent traffic violations and other activities that could threaten road safety across the state.
