The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering a secure environment for journalists, emphasizing that a robust democracy hinges on a free press. He made these remarks at the book launch of ‘Writing for Media and Monetising It’ by Azu Ishiekwene, Senior Vice Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of Leadership Media Group, held in Abuja.
During his keynote address, Idris stressed the importance of responsible journalism, urging media professionals to balance their freedom with ethical considerations and national duty. He affirmed, “As we celebrate this milestone, it is crucial to reaffirm the Tinubu administration’s dedication to a free and responsible press. We recognize that societal progress is nurtured when media outlets report truthfully, hold authorities accountable, and operate without fear of reprisal.”
While advocating for press freedom, the minister cautioned against the perils of misinformation and emphasized the need for accuracy, balance, and avoidance of sensationalism in media reporting. He praised Ishiekwene’s book as a pivotal resource bridging media practice with entrepreneurship, describing it as a valuable guide derived from the author’s extensive experience.
Zainab Nda-Isaiah, Chairman of Leadership Media Group, highlighted the financial challenges faced by journalists and writers globally despite their significant impact on public opinion.
