The 36 state governors, convened under the auspices of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), recently held deliberations in Abuja regarding the ongoing negotiations on the national minimum wage. Emerging from the meetings that spanned Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, the governors reiterated their commitment to engaging with pertinent stakeholders towards achieving a consensus on the matter. The sessions, conducted at the NGF National Secretariat, saw participation from governors representing a diverse array of states including Oyo, Zamfara, Anambra, Delta, Gombe, Kano, Imo, Kwara, Ondo, Kaduna, Kebbi, Ebonyi, Sokoto, and Ogun. Additionally, deputy governors from Akwa Ibom, Osun, and Borno states were also present, underscoring the breadth of regional representation at the discussions.

Key agenda items included updates on local government autonomy and the disbursement of NG-CARES funds to states. The governors engaged in detailed discussions covering various aspects such as economic reforms, fiscal policies, and developmental initiatives facilitated by international agencies like the World Bank.

The ongoing negotiations for a new national minimum wage, necessitated by the expiration of the Minimum Wage Act of 2019, have been a focal point of national discourse. Initiated by President Bola Tinubu earlier this year, the tripartite committee tasked with the negotiations includes representatives from organized labor, federal and state governments, and the private sector. Despite recent industrial actions and disruptions, the parties remain committed to reaching a mutually agreeable resolution.
