Ahead of the gubernatorial election scheduled for September 21, 2024, in Edo State, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide has urged Governor Godwin Obaseki to promptly confer the staff of office upon the five Ijaw kingdoms within the state.
The IYC expressed concern over what it described as the prolonged marginalization of Ijaw kingdoms due to the absence of official recognition through the staff of office for Ijaw monarchs in Edo State. The council warned that this situation could lead to discord and unrest, lamenting the enduring systemic efforts aimed at undermining the autonomy of Ijaws in the state.
In a statement issued by its spokesman, Amb. Binebai Princewill, the IYC criticized successive governors of Edo State for what it termed ethnic bias, alleging neglect of the Ijaw community despite its cultural, political, social, and economic contributions.
“The demand from IYC is for Governor Obaseki to take proactive steps to immediately confer the staff of office upon the five Ijaw kingdoms before the gubernatorial election,” the statement read. “It is imperative to emphasize that the Ijaws in Edo State are indigenous to their ancestral lands and must not be subjected to historical erasure or annexation of their territories. Our people deserve fair treatment, dignity, and respect in Edo State.”
Highlighting decades of political exclusion and underdevelopment in Ijaw areas since the inception of Edo State, the IYC underscored its commitment to ensuring that such injustices are addressed without delay.
