A Bayelsa High Court in Ogbia Town, Ogbia Local Government Area of the state, has sentenced four kidnappers to 40 years in prison for their involvement in the abduction of former Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Federal Otokito. The incident occurred on January 20, 2022, with the perpetrators demanding ransom.

The convicted individuals, identified as Kingsley Obhesi (24), Joshua Abi (32), Gift Damene (38), and Powell Inegite (36), were found guilty of charges including conspiracy, kidnapping, and unlawful possession of firearms in Suit No OHC/4C/2022. The presiding judge, S.W. Amaduobogha, delivered the verdict on Tuesday.

According to Stella Jerry-Friday, the prosecuting counsel from the police, the convicted kidnappers used firearms and other offensive weapons to forcibly take Otokito from Otuokpoti community, Ogbia Local Government Area, and transported him to Igbomotoru bush in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, intending to extort ransom or other illegal gains.

Judge S.W. Amaduobogha affirmed that the investigative and prosecution teams had convincingly established the charges of conspiracy, kidnapping, and unlawful possession of firearms against the defendants beyond reasonable doubt.
