The findings indicate a decline in public confidence regarding the government’s anti-corruption efforts. Specifically, the report estimates that approximately N721 billion (about $1.26 billion) was paid in bribes, accounting for 0.35 percent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Bribery locations were significant, with about 35 percent of bribes occurring in public offices and 36 percent on the streets. Additionally, 11 percent of bribes took place in respondents’ homes, while 7 percent occurred in public venues like restaurants and malls.

The survey identified the sectors most involved in bribery: 30 percent of citizens reported bribing healthcare professionals, while 24 percent engaged with public utility officers. Police officers ranked third, with a contact rate of 20 percent.

Regarding public sentiment, the NBS noted a steady decline in confidence in the government’s anti-corruption measures. While more than half of citizens believed the government was effectively combating corruption in 2019, this figure dropped to less than a third by 2023.

The report also highlighted an increase in private sector bribery, with 14 percent of citizens reporting encounters in this area, up from 6 percent in 2019.
