After meeting with President Bola Tinubu, Fagbemi underscored that the Supreme Court’s decision would take “immediate effect.” He emphasized that state governors are now required to conduct LGA elections, with the ruling outlining penalties for non-compliance.
Fagbemi stated:
“Naturally, this is a cause for celebration. Nigerians are happy about it. I refer to this as a local government emancipation judgment, as it liberates local governments from past constraints.
“I hope local government officials seize this opportunity to foster development within their communities.
“The ruling clearly outlines their responsibilities and the consequences for failing to adhere to the Supreme Court’s decision, which is effective immediately.”
