Three individuals have been confirmed dead following a fire incident at a hotel in Benin City, Edo State.

The State Police Command spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday. He stated that the fire broke out around 4 a.m. on Sunday, June 23, 2024, on the first floor of Cibeles Luxury Hotel, located at 9 Emoavwodua Street, off Limit Road, off Sapele.

Nwabuzor revealed that several people have been arrested in connection with the fire.

The victims, identified as Bright Amechi, Michael Awowea, and Cynthia Ogiugo, were all guests at the hotel and were asleep in their rooms when the fire started.

“The DPO contacted the Edo State Fire Service, which responded and extinguished the fire. Three individuals were found unconscious due to smoke inhalation,” the statement read.

“They were immediately transported to Edo State Specialist Hospital on Sapele Road, Benin City, and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), where Bright Amechi and Michael Awowea were confirmed dead.

“At Edo State Specialist Hospital, Cynthia Ogiugo was also confirmed dead. The bodies have been deposited at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital mortuary in Benin City.”

Emmanuel Ogunyemi, the supervisor on duty at the time, alleged that the fire originated from one of the rooms on the first floor, occupied by a lodger.

“The lodger of the room, Andrew Roberts of Sapele Road, Benin City, was contacted, and in his statement, he indicated that the fire was caused by an electrical fault in the air conditioner in his room,” Nwabuzor explained.

“The DPO has reported that some individuals have been arrested, and investigations are ongoing to determine their culpability or innocence.”
