The National Population Commission (NPC) is poised to initiate a population and housing census pending approval from President Bola Tinubu, according to NPC Federal Commissioner for Lagos State, Mrs. Saidat Oladunjoye. Oladunjoye highlighted the critical need for updated demographic data, noting Nigeria’s last census was almost two decades ago. She affirmed NPC’s readiness and preparedness to conduct the census once the presidential proclamation is received.
“The census is crucial to understanding Nigeria’s current population dynamics and guiding future policy decisions,” Oladunjoye stated, stressing the importance of modern data collection methods aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The event underscored global efforts to harness population data for sustainable development and poverty eradication, aligning with themes from the International Conference on Population and Development Programme of Action and the Addis Ababa Declaration.
