Matawalle’s tenure as governor faced severe criticism due to widespread insecurity in Zamfara. This new accusation follows a previous denial from Matawalle’s camp, which had refuted Turji’s initial claims linking him to terrorism.

Turji, who operates in northern Nigerian states such as Zamfara, Sokoto, and Niger, stated in the video that “Dan Maigari and Baleri are siblings” and implicated Bashari in armed banditry in Zamfara and Sokoto. He urged Matawalle’s supporters to investigate his claims rather than dismissing them as propaganda.

Turji questioned the role of Matawalle and others in the kidnapping and subsequent release of female students in Marado, asking, “Since you claim Bashari is not a bandit and that Matawalle is not involved in banditry, from whom were the girls rescued?”

He accused Bashari of continuing his operations between Zamfara and Sokoto states without evidence of surrendering to authorities and maintained that his allegations are truthful.

In July, Turji had previously accused Matawalle of supporting terrorism in Nigeria, claiming that the former governor’s administration was complicit in the ongoing insecurity. Turji stated, “This video is to inform all Nigerians, from leaders to the common people. The insecurity issue has the full backing of the previous Zamfara government, and I have evidence to support this.”

In response, Matawalle’s camp denied the accusations, describing them as false and malicious. A statement from Deyemi Saka, Lead Partner at Lambert and Curtis, stated, “The video shared on X (formerly Twitter) contains baseless and deliberately concocted lies against the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle.”

The statement further defended Matawalle’s tenure, highlighting his refusal to negotiate with bandits after the amnesty period and his commitment to addressing criminality. It dismissed Turji’s allegations as a “victim mentality” typical of a terrorist’s behavior.
