The initially peaceful demonstration turned chaotic when police attempted to disperse the protesters with tear gas and live ammunition. Witnesses reported that Amiru, a trader who was an innocent bystander, was shot in the chest while trying to escape the violence. He was taken to Zone 3 Hospital but later died while being transferred to Maitama District Hospital.
As the situation worsened, protesters retaliated by throwing stones and seizing police weapons. The conflict escalated further as demonstrators overpowered the police and set fire to three police vehicles. Bystanders and vendors were also caught in the crossfire, contributing to the confusion and panic in the area.
Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the Abuja police, confirmed the attack, stating that the IMN members launched an unprovoked assault on police personnel at Wuse Junction. Two police officers were killed, three were left unconscious, and three police patrol vehicles were destroyed. Adeh reported that the attackers were armed with machetes, improvised explosive devices, and knives.
The FCT Police Commissioner, CP Benneth C. Igweh, condemned the attack and vowed to bring those responsible to justice. He assured that the situation is under control and normalcy has been restored.
