Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has condemned the use of insecurity as a political tool in Nigeria. Speaking at the 2024 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Lagos on August 25, she emphasized that without adequate security, the country cannot achieve meaningful development.
“We cannot have socio-economic development without security,” Okonjo-Iweala stated. She criticized how political actors exploit insecurity to undermine their opponents, often at the expense of innocent lives and property. “Politicians who use insecurity to make their opponents appear incapable of governing are contributing to the current crisis,” she said.
She also addressed the issue of large-scale crude oil theft, highlighting its severe impact on Nigeria’s economic and financial stability. “Nigerians must unite against the theft of our national assets,” she urged, stressing that with the available technology, there are no excuses for failing to combat this issue effectively.
