Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has strongly criticized the federal government for its ongoing arrest and detention of journalists who expose corruption. He warned that Nigeria risks deteriorating into a Banana Republic if this trend continues……CONTINUE READING
Obi emphasized the need for the National Assembly to pass a Freedom of Information Act to protect Nigerians’ right to access information. He argued that free speech is intrinsically connected to the public’s right to know about government actions.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Obi said, “The fundamental right to free speech is closely tied to the right to access information about government activities and decisions. The troubling practice of government agents suppressing non-security related information highlights the urgent need for the Freedom of Information Bill. Journalists and the media are essential for holding those in power accountable, especially when the government oversteps.”
Obi expressed deep concern over the recent harassment, abduction, and detention of investigative journalists by government agents, calling it unacceptable and a violation of democratic freedoms. He also demanded the release of PIDOMNIGERIA, a journalist arrested by the police last week, and urged the government to foster an open society where free speech is protected.
“The disappearance and detention of PIDOMNIGERIA is a serious issue that requires accountability from Nigerian authorities. If such actions persist, Nigeria may descend into a Banana Republic where journalists are silenced or disappear for performing their duties. This is not the Nigeria we envision. We demand justice, accountability, and an end to these severe attacks on press freedom. We seek a society where citizens can freely express themselves, access unclassified information, and where the government is fully accountable,” Obi added.
