The succession process has been marred by legal disputes. A faction of the Oyo kingmakers, or Oyomesi, has sought a court injunction against Governor Seyi Makinde, challenging his rejection of Prince Lukuman Gbadegesin, whom they claim was unanimously selected in a meeting on September 30, 2023. This has led to a stalemate between the kingmakers and the governor.

The Ladigbolu family emphasized that a fresh selection process is necessary, condemning those who accuse Governor Makinde of delaying tactics and advocating against the kingmakers’ choice. They insisted that any process deviating from Ifa divination, the traditional method agreed upon, would be unacceptable.

“The position of Alaafin is crucial to Yorubaland. We urge Yoruba people globally to support the fight against any imposition that goes against our traditions,” the Ladigbolu family stated. They warned that any deviation from the agreed process could have long-term negative effects and damage the integrity of the selection.
