Gumi Criticizes Bandits For Their Misguided Notion Of Religious Duty

Islamic cleric Ahmad Gumi has revealed that bandits in Nigeria believe they are serving a higher purpose through their criminal activities. In a Facebook post on Sunday, Gumi responded to a recent incident where bandits seized and burned Mines Resistant Armour Personnels (MRAPs) belonging to the military. Gumi’s post, titled “Radicalisation of Bandits: I warned against the danger,” highlighted that the bandits initially engaged in what he termed an “ethnic war,” which he believed could have been resolved with a different approach. He expressed regret that his warnings against escalating military actions were not heeded.
“Initially, bandits were involved in an ethnic conflict that could have been resolved,” Gumi wrote. “I cautioned that intensifying military actions would lead them to adopt ideologically driven guerrilla tactics. Unfortunately, no one listened.”
