The announcement was made by Lagos State Health Commissioner, Prof. Akin Abayomi, during the opening of the 7th Nigeria Pharma Manufacturers’ Expo in Lagos on Wednesday. This major biennial event, co-organized by PMG-MAN and GPE Expo PVT. Ltd, is the largest pharmaceutical manufacturing exhibition in Central and West Africa.

The Expo, themed “Fostering Partnership and Innovation to Unlock the Pharma Manufacturing Value Chain in Nigeria, Central and West Africa,” saw participation from 55 companies from China and India, as well as 100 members of PMG-MAN.

Abayomi revealed that the Lagos State Government is currently drafting legislation for the new drug management agency, which will be submitted to the cabinet and subsequently to the Lagos Assembly. He noted that while other states have already established such agencies, Lagos is keen to catch up and leverage its industrial platforms in Lagos and Ogun states, where much of the nation’s drug production occurs.

The new agency will aim to boost local manufacturing and ensure rigorous quality assurance, including random testing in collaboration with NAFDAC, alongside private sector partnerships. Abayomi praised PMG-MAN for its efforts to enhance domestic production and ensure drug sufficiency, urging local manufacturers to adopt global best practices to safeguard public health.

He emphasized the critical importance of ensuring that pharmaceuticals meet high standards to prevent adverse health outcomes, stating, “We must ensure that we’re not putting our citizens at risk because a substandard drug can lead to severe health issues or even death.”
