Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has reacted to claims of betrayal made by Barrister Julius Abure, the party’s embattled national chairman.
According to reports by Naija News, during a recent National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, Abure accused Obi and the party’s sole governor, Alex Otti of Abia State, of conspiring against him. Abure alleged that they orchestrated a stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, Abia State, where former Finance Minister Esther Nenadi Usman was appointed chairperson of a 29-member caretaker committee to resolve the ongoing leadership dispute within the party.
In response, Obi, through his spokesperson, Comrade Ibrahim Umar of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), expressed his disappointment over Abure’s remarks, dismissing the accusations as politically driven and misleading.
“I am disappointed, though not surprised, by the baseless accusations of betrayal directed at Mr. Peter Obi by Julius Abure, the embattled national chairman of the party. These claims are clearly politically motivated and intended to mislead the public,” Umar said.
Umar clarified that the stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia was held to address the lingering leadership issues within the Labour Party and was not aimed at undermining anyone. He further emphasized that the Obidient Movement stands firmly in support of the stakeholders’ decisions, which were made with the principles of unity, justice, and transparency in mind.
Umar went on to criticize Abure for distorting the truth and attempting to defame Obi’s character. He questioned why Abure was reluctant to step down, given that his tenure was meant to end in June, and challenged his intent to continue fighting for power.
“Is he fighting simply because justice was sought? His tenure ended in June, yet he refused to step aside, declaring that he’s ready for a fight. Who exactly is he fighting? While we understand his desperation for power, it’s time for him to prioritize the party’s interest over his personal ambitions,” Umar stated.
Umar concluded by calling on Abure to accept the intervention led by Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti, which aimed to resolve the party’s internal disputes and move forward constructively. He added that the Labour Party would not engage in character attacks but remains focused on resolving the crisis for the party’s future.
