Security Forces Prevent Assault On Imo Police Headquarters

In a successful operation, operatives from the Imo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force thwarted an attempted assault on the Njaba Divisional Headquarters yesterday (Sunday). The attack was reportedly carried out by individuals affiliated with the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network.

According to a statement from the command’s Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, the assailants arrived in three SUVs and launched a violent attack on the headquarters, marked by sporadic gunfire.

The police responded swiftly and decisively, taking defensive positions and engaging the attackers. The confrontation resulted in the death of three assailants, while the others, who sustained various gunshot wounds, retreated into the nearby bushes.

During the incident, law enforcement recovered a General Purpose Machine Gun, an AK-47 rifle, and three vehicles—a Toyota Lexus 470, a Mercedes GLK, and a Toyota Venza.

Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, is leading an extensive operation to apprehend the remaining suspects. He commended the bravery of the operatives and assured the public of the police’s commitment to enhancing safety and taking strong action against any threats to peace.

This incident follows an earlier attack at the beginning of September 2024, when armed assailants killed two vigilante members and a police officer, and set fire to several vehicles at the Obowo Police Station.
