Ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has urged political parties to cease all campaign activities. The Commission emphasized that it is illegal for any political party in Edo State to conduct rallies, processions, or media campaigns from midnight onward. Additionally, parties, candidates, and their supporters are instructed not to appear at polling units in campaign attire or bring any campaign materials.

The announcement read: “The Commission wishes to remind political parties that in line with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, and item 12 of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2024 Edo State Governorship election, all campaigns by political parties end at midnight today. Therefore, any political party engaging in rallies or media campaigns after this time is in violation of the law, as outlined in Section 96 of the Electoral Act 2022.”

On Election Day, Saturday, September 21, INEC reiterated that parties and candidates must not appear at polling units in campaign attire or carry campaign materials.
