Briggs Warns: Rivers Citizens Might Take Up Arms If Police Don’t Act

Prominent environmentalist and human rights advocate Ann-Kio Briggs has condemned the Nigeria Police Force for what she described as “unacceptable” and “dangerous” operations in Rivers State. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, Briggs voiced her concerns about the potential repercussions of the police’s actions in the region……CONTINUE READING

Briggs criticized the police for their selective enforcement of court orders, particularly following the recent election of 23 local government chairpersons in the state. She condemned the decision to withdraw officers from local council secretariats, especially after Governor Siminalayi Fubara warned that some political figures dissatisfied with the election results were planning to incite violence.

“We’ve been raising alarms since last October as this political turmoil escalated. It’s like the witch cried in the night, and now we’re looking for the cause of the child’s death. We know exactly what’s happening,” she stated. “The local governments currently in chaos are the same ones that refuse to accept that their terms ended over three months ago. These are also the local governments whose leaders have disparaged the governor repeatedly since last year.”

Briggs highlighted that the police had kept the offices of all 23 local governments in Rivers State under lock and key for the past three months after the chairpersons’ tenures expired. “This morning, they were ordered to vacate the local government areas, fully aware that this would lead to unrest, leaving the newly elected chairpersons vulnerable.”

She further noted that the people of Rivers State had repeatedly called on President Bola Tinubu for intervention over the past year, but he had remained silent. “Now that local governments are ablaze, the President is calling on the governor of Rivers State and unnamed others to ensure safety in the state. The police are meant to maintain order, and this situation is both dangerous and unacceptable for the people of Rivers State,” she added.
