Fubara Launches Investigation Into Burning Of LG Secretariat And Violence In Rivers State [See Full List]Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has announced the formation of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the arson, killings, and destruction of property at several Local Government Council headquarters. Reports from Naija News indicate that unidentified assailants attacked LGA secretariats on Monday, setting them ablaze and assaulting staff members on-site.
This violent incident occurred just a day after the inauguration of new council leaders following Saturday’s elections. The Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Wenike Danagogo, made the announcement regarding the commission in a statement released on Tuesday.
He confirmed that the members of the panel would be sworn in at 4 p.m. today. The statement read: “JUDICIAL COMMISSION OF INQUIRY INTO THE ARSON, KILLINGS, AND WANTON DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY AT SOME LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCIL HEADQUARTERS WHICH OCCURRED ON OR ABOUT MONDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2024.”
According to Section 2(1) of the Commissions of Inquiry Law, Cap 30, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999, Governor Fubara approved the establishment of this commission to address the incidents that transpired on October 7, 2024.
The members of the commission include:
1.Hon. Justice I.R. Minakiri – Chairman
2.Barr. Felicia Nwoke – Member
3.Prof. Blessing Didia – Member
4.Sir Samuel Egbe – Member
5.Venerable Alex Usifor – Member
6.Barr. Uzor Ikenga – Counsel to the Commission
7.Mrs. Inyingi Brown – Secretary
The commission’s members will be sworn in today, Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt, at 4 p.m., with a call for them to arrive by 3:30 p.m.
