JOHESU Sets 15-Day Deadline For FG To Meet Demands Or Face StrikeNigerian public healthcare professionals under the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) have issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding resolution of their outstanding issues or risk another strike. The union expressed frustration over the government’s failure to address their requests since June 2021, after suspending a previous strike based on President Bola Tinubu’s assurances of intervention. Key demands include the non-payment of COVID-19 hazard allowances to members, tax exemptions on healthcare workers’ allowances, and an immediate halt to the proposed creation of an agency to oversee national health facilities.

The last JOHESU strike, which lasted from May 19 to June 6, 2023, significantly disrupted healthcare services in public hospitals and ended only after Tinubu’s commitment to mediate.

In related news, primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), represented by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), have decided to suspend their strike. The teachers had initially commenced the strike on September 18, 2024, over the non-payment of 60% of their minimum wage arrears and other allowances.

NUT Chairman in the FCT, Comrade Abdullahi Mohammed Shafas, announced the suspension following a recent emergency State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting. Shafas noted that the decision was influenced by the renewed commitment shown by FCT Minister Nysome Wike regarding the payment of the outstanding 60%. Wike had directed the FCT treasury to use the area council chairmen’s 10% Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to facilitate the payments.

The SWEC also acknowledged Wike’s continued engagement in addressing the teachers’ demands, which contributed to the decision to suspend the strike.
