Wike Declares War On Beggars In FCT: Public Reactions VaryThe recent announcement by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), declaring a “war on beggars” has sparked diverse reactions.

During the launch of a road construction project in Abuja, Wike expressed concerns that the capital is becoming a hub for beggars, stating, “We have declared war on beggars because Abuja is returning to a beggars’ city.” He urged citizens to assist any family members who are begging, warning that the government plans to remove them from the city, emphasizing that Abuja should present a clean image to visitors.

This is not the first time the FCTA has taken action against begging. In April 2023, authorities sent 217 beggars and homeless individuals back to their home states, primarily from northern Nigeria. The previous year, over 150 beggars, including women and children, were arrested during enforcement operations.

Reactions to Wike’s remarks have been critical. The African Action Congress (AAC) condemned the directive, arguing it reflects a disconnect between the government and the economic hardships faced by many Nigerians. AAC FCT Chairman Agena Robert Ande described the order as a “draconian directive,” highlighting the stigma associated with begging.

The Socio-Economic Rights Accountability Project (SERAP) also criticized Wike’s ultimatum, threatening legal action unless it is rescinded. SERAP argued that socioeconomic status should not be criminalized and called for measures to support individuals in rebuilding their lives instead of punitive actions.
