Tinubu’s Response To Oba Of Lagos Over Concerns on Coastal Highway Project – Umahi Reveals
Tinubu’s Response To Oba Of Lagos Over Concerns on Coastal Highway Project – Umahi RevealsThe Minister of Works, David Umahi, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu assured the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project was designed for the overall development of Nigeria. Umahi made the statement following concerns raised by the monarch, who had expressed displeasure over how the project would impact his land.

Umahi explained that the Oba’s complaint centered around the project affecting his property, but the President reassured him that the initiative was for national progress.
The Minister further pointed out that those protesting the project’s land encroachment were not even natives of Lagos. Speaking to journalists after an interactive session with the Senate Committee on Works on Thursday, Umahi emphasized that the areas affected were largely unoccupied, with no buildings on the land.
He added, “Even the Oba’s land is being impacted, and he spoke to the President about it. The President said, ‘No, Oba, it’s for development.’ So, if the Oba is willing to sacrifice his empty land, who else is there to complain? Those protesting are not even from Lagos, although that doesn’t matter. It’s like being more Catholic than the Pope.”
Umahi also addressed the political opposition, stating that some individuals, particularly a woman whom he did not name, were using politics to hinder the project. “I know who is behind it,” he said. “They’ve been playing all kinds of politics, but I’m ready for it. I’m a man of courage, and we are proceeding with the road construction along the disputed route. Nothing will stop it.”
The Minister also dismissed criticisms of Tinubu’s leadership, arguing that detractors were simply envious of his achievements. According to Umahi, Tinubu’s decisions, including the Coastal Highway project, are always aimed at advancing the country’s development and have never failed.
“There’s envy and jealousy,” Umahi said. “Some people never believed Tinubu could turn around the economy, but it takes divine intervention for him to succeed. No decision by the President has ever failed, including the tax reform bill.”
Umahi expressed confidence that once the public fully understood the importance of the Coastal Highway project, they would realize it’s a vital driver of growth for all states in Nigeria.
