ASUP Suspends Industrial Action, Instructs Members To Return To WorkThe Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has instructed its members across the country to resume work following the conclusion of its two-week strike, which was initially called as a warning for an impending indefinite industrial action.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement signed by ASUP President Kpanja Shamnah, the union announced that members are to return to their duties on Monday, December 16, 2024. This decision comes after a conciliation meeting between ASUP and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment on December 9, which led to the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The statement explained that the two-week strike, which began on December 2, 2024, was triggered by the government’s failure to address nine key issues outlined in a work plan jointly developed with ASUP to resolve ongoing trade disputes. The strike was also meant to serve as a precursor to a possible indefinite strike if the issues were not resolved.
Following the conciliation meeting, a new MoU was signed, and both parties agreed to hold another meeting on January 23, 2025, to assess the government’s compliance and address any outstanding concerns. The ASUP National Executive Council will also meet after this date to review the situation.
ASUP expressed gratitude to its members for their commitment during the strike and urged the government to diligently work toward resolving the disputes. The union emphasized that the success of the agreements will be monitored closely to ensure that progress is made.
