Yahaya Bello Stays In Custody As Bail Conditions Await CompletionJustice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered that former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello be remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre until the conditions for his bail are met.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Bello was granted bail in the sum of N500 million, with two sureties who must each provide an equal sum. In his ruling, Justice Nwite emphasized that the decision to grant bail was at the court’s discretion, regardless of whether the application was opposed or supported.

He stated, “I have considered the arguments from both sides. Given the circumstances of this case, including the defendant’s conduct, I have taken a second look at the application. Despite some reservations, I am inclined to grant bail.”

The conditions for bail include that both sureties must own property within the jurisdiction of the court in Abuja, and they must swear an affidavit of means. The properties will be verified by the Chief Deputy Registrar of the court. Additionally, Bello is required to deposit his international passport with the Chief Registrar and submit recent passport photographs for both himself and his sureties.

Bello will remain in custody until the bail conditions are fully satisfied. The trial has been adjourned to February 24, 28, and March 6 and 7, 2025.

Bello is facing a 19-count charge of money laundering, breach of trust, and the misappropriation of approximately N80.2 billion, as brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). During the proceedings, EFCC counsel, Kemi Pinheiro, informed the court that an earlier application to expedite the arraignment had become irrelevant due to developments in the case.
