Sources familiar with the situation told Punch that former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Head of State Yakubu Gowon are among the key supporters of this initiative.

Shekarau, a prominent figure in the League of Northern Democrats (LND), has been engaging with political leaders from the South-West, South-East, and South-South regions to foster a broad-based coalition.

Umar Ardo, the convener of the LND, recently announced the group’s intention to evolve into a national political platform.

During a press briefing on January 5, Ardo expressed the group’s readiness to transform into the League of National Democrats, highlighting a shift towards inclusivity.

“This new political platform aims to provide a credible alternative by institutionalizing meritocracy, promoting accountability, and ensuring the emergence of leaders with proven competence and integrity,” Ardo stated.

Insiders revealed that both Obasanjo and Gowon had advised the LND leadership to make the platform truly national by including southern politicians and ensuring inclusiveness.

In a meeting held in October 2024, Obasanjo hosted a 20-member delegation of the LND, led by Shekarau, at his penthouse within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta. He suggested renaming the group to the National League of Democrats to reflect its broader vision.

“We must start working for the national interest. Yes, you have formed the League of Northern Democrats, but it would be better to call it the National League of Democrats, as regional origins should not limit our vision,” he emphasized.

A former spokesperson for ex-Vice President Namadi Sambo, Umar Sani, a founding member of the LND, confirmed that both Obasanjo and Gowon are key supporters of the group. He noted that Shekarau is actively engaged in discussions with prominent southern politicians.

Sani stated, “We are having talks with some southern politicians, though their identities are not fully revealed. Shekarau and others are leading these discussions.

“When we met Baba Obasanjo, he emphasized that this initiative should transcend regional boundaries. General Gowon echoed similar sentiments, as did other influential Nigerians.”

Ladan Salihu, the spokesperson for the LND, mentioned that discussions are ongoing with southern leaders, including former governors, senators, and ministers.

“We’ve been approached by notable politicians from the South-East, and there are similar interests in the South-West. Some leaders are considering forming the League of Southern Democrats or joining our platform if it becomes a national entity,” Salihu said.

The LND has not yet been officially registered as a political party, as consultations are still underway. However, Salihu confirmed that the group is in regular contact with respected southern leaders who share their vision of national unity and reform.

“This isn’t just rhetoric. We are in constant dialogue with these leaders because they believe in our mission to rescue Nigeria through real, actionable steps,” Salihu added.

The LND’s efforts come as political maneuvering intensifies with various leaders planning to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
