Following her resignation, Meranda was appointed as Deputy Speaker, while Obasa reclaimed his role as Speaker of the Assembly.
Addressing lawmakers before stepping down, Meranda described her resignation as a selfless sacrifice to restore stability and order within the House.
“I want everyone to know that I have made a personal sacrifice to resolve the leadership crisis affecting the Lagos State House of Assembly,” she stated.
She acknowledged her family’s long-standing commitment to democracy and good governance, reaffirming her dedication to integrity and public service.
“My family has played a significant role in strengthening democracy and governance, and I will always uphold the values of honor, dignity, and service exemplified by my late father,” she added.
Meranda formally announced that her resignation would take effect on March 3, 2025, explaining that her continued tenure had become a source of tension within the Assembly.
“With great responsibility, I officially resign as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, effective today, March 3, 2025. This decision was made with careful thought and deep reflection,” she declared.
“Stepping Down to Preserve Legislative Integrity”
Meranda emphasized that her resignation was in the best interest of the Assembly and the state, stating that she was taking the step to prevent further conflict and uphold the integrity of the legislature.
“I believe I have shown leadership and selflessness by stepping down to protect the institution we have worked so hard to build,” she remarked.
Despite leaving the Speaker’s position, Meranda reassured her constituents that she remains committed to serving Apapa Constituency 1 and the people of Lagos State.
