Political Tension In Abia: PDP Accuses Governor Otti OF Power Grab Over LG Chairmen’s Tenure
The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized Governor Alex Otti over his alleged attempt to reduce the tenure of elected Local Government Chairmen from four years to two years through the State House of Assembly.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Describing the move as unconstitutional and undemocratic, the PDP warned that it undermines the rule of law and urged the governor to reconsider his stance.
The party called on civil society groups and the public to resist any action that could weaken democratic institutions in the state.
‘A Clear Abuse of Power’ – PDP
In a statement issued by its State Chairman, Elder Abraham Amah, the PDP rejected any attempt to alter the tenure of duly elected council officials, labeling it a blatant abuse of power.
The party urged the State House of Assembly to reject the proposal, arguing that it jeopardizes the integrity of the electoral process and disenfranchises voters.
“How would Nigerians feel if the President proposed reducing the tenure of governors from four years to two years? Would that not be seen as an unjust and destabilizing move? Wouldn’t such a proposal be resisted as an attack on democracy?” the statement questioned.
The PDP further accused Otti of trying to manipulate the system for political convenience, warning that altering tenure midway amounts to undermining democracy.
‘Don’t Change the Rules Midway’
The party stressed that governance must be rooted in fairness, transparency, and respect for constitutional order.
“No responsible democratic government changes the rules in the middle of the game. The Local Government elections were conducted based on a four-year tenure, and those elected were sworn in accordingly. Attempting to alter their tenure retroactively is a grave injustice,” the PDP stated.
The party cautioned that if Otti succeeds, it could set a dangerous precedent where future leaders manipulate gubernatorial tenures in Abia State through similar legislative maneuvers.
‘Prioritize Governance, Not Political Games’
The PDP urged Governor Otti to focus on addressing the real challenges facing Abia residents instead of engaging in politically motivated attempts to shorten the tenure of local government officials.
