Oba OF Benin Makes Historic Appointment, Chooses Emmanuel Iyase As Okao Eguae For Key Dukedoms

This appointment follows the suspension of Prince Owen Jackson Akenzua (Ologbo) and Chief D. E. Igiehon (Ehor), along with 69 other Dukes, for alleged rebellion against the Benin monarchy. Chief Iyase’s appointment marks a historic first as he becomes the first Okao Eguae to be chosen from the Benin Palace. He will now oversee the traditional leadership of the affected Dukedoms.

His responsibilities will include working closely with elders and other officials under the Oba’s authority to ensure effective governance and peace in both Ologbo and Ehor.

During a traditional event known as Ekpomwen-abor, held at the Ugha Ozolua area of the Oba’s Palace in Benin City, Oba Ewuare II officially welcomed the new Okao Eguae. In his address, the Oba urged Iyase to maintain integrity and professionalism in his role.

“I also urge the newly appointed Okao to avoid any unethical actions that could undermine the Oba’s authority or tarnish the reputation of the Dukedoms,” Oba Ewuare II remarked.
