The affected areas include Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
This alert was part of NiMet’s weather outlook released on Friday and shared with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) by Gayus Musa, the Meteorological Manager for Gombe State, on Saturday.
According to NiMet, temperatures in the affected states are expected to soar to around 40°C starting Saturday, bringing significant thermal discomfort.
“Following three days of rainfall, heat levels are expected to spike from April 12, due to rising temperatures and clear skies,” the agency said. “Maximum temperatures in the northern region may reach up to 40°C, with clear skies and atmospheric moisture intensifying the discomfort.”
Musa urged residents of Gombe to take precautionary measures to reduce the risk of heat stress, warning that the combination of high temperatures and humidity could have serious health consequences.
He advised people to limit sun exposure, stay in well-ventilated spaces, wear light and breathable clothing, and stay hydrated. “Avoid direct sunlight between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., drink plenty of water, and use sun protection,” he added.
Additionally, he emphasized the need to care for vulnerable groups, such as children and the elderly, while raising awareness about the dangers of heat-related illnesses and ways to prevent them.
“Let’s look out for the vulnerable members of our communities — especially our children and the elderly,” Musa urged, stressing the importance of prioritizing health and safety during the extreme weather conditions.
