Tensions Soar In Kano: Security Forces Seal Galadima’s Home Amid Emirate Leadership Dispute
On Friday, security operatives cordoned off the official residence of the Galadima of Kano following a dispute over the prestigious traditional title. The crisis has intensified following the recent reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the emir of Kano by the state government, four years after his removal. This has sparked a fierce power struggle between Sanusi and Aminu Bayero, who was appointed as the emir in 2020 after Sanusi’s deposition.
On Friday, Muhammadu Sanusi, with backing from the Kano State Government, promoted Mannir Sanusi, the Wamban Kano, to the position of Galadiman Kano during a ceremony at the palace. Meanwhile, a rival faction loyal to Aminu Bayero conducted a separate ceremony at the Nasarawa mini-palace, naming Sanusi Ado Bayero as the new Galadiman Kano.
The two rival claimants have further fueled the leadership crisis, prompting the deployment of security forces to prevent any potential violence or unrest. Heavily armed security personnel were stationed at the Galadima House in Kano’s Galadanci area on Friday morning, with access to the area restricted to maintain peace amid the escalating tensions.
Additionally, at the palace ceremony, Muhammadu Sanusi promoted several other individuals to higher traditional titles, including Alhaji Kabir Hashim, who was elevated to Wamban Kano, and Alhaji Mahmoud Bayero, who was promoted to Turakin Kano.
