Tinubu Gov’t Under Fire: SERAP, Editors Slam Cybercrimes Act ‘Weaponisation’ Against Critics!

Their criticism was voiced during a World Press Freedom Day press briefing held in Lagos on Saturday.
The two groups expressed concern over what they described as a disturbing pattern of using the Cybercrimes Act to arrest and detain individuals simply for expressing opinions online. They highlighted Section 24 of the amended Act—focused on cyberstalking—as a key tool allegedly being misused to silence dissent, muzzle the press, and intimidate critics of the government.
SERAP and the NGE decried the law as overly broad and open to misuse, warning that its continued application poses a serious threat to freedom of expression in Nigeria.
They issued a joint appeal to President Tinubu, urging him to review and amend the Cybercrimes Act and other oppressive laws to align with the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights norms, in order to safeguard the rights of citizens and uphold media freedom.
The groups further demanded that the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and related agencies cease using the law to detain journalists, bloggers, and activists.
They also called on the Attorney General to initiate urgent legislative reforms, and appealed to the National Assembly to revise any laws that restrict press freedom and free speech.
Additionally, they held state governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory accountable, urging them to stop arbitrary shutdowns of media outlets and to drop all existing charges against media personnel.
