There had been widespread speculation that the vehicle conveying the two women was ambushed by bandits attempting to kidnap their mother.
However, speaking to journalists on Thursday in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, Governor Kefas revealed that his sister was actually shot and killed by a police escort assigned to protect their mother. The incident occurred along the Wukari-Chonku Road.
He explained that an investigation found the police escort had shot Atsi at close range. Medical examinations confirmed the presence of gun pellets in her body, which led to her death.
During the press briefing, the governor also observed a minute of silence in honour of Atsi and over 50 victims recently killed by suspected herdsmen in the Karim-Lamido Local Government Area.
Governor Kefas emphasized the need for peace and unity among communities, lamenting the needless bloodshed and conflict. He announced plans to establish a commission of inquiry to investigate the root causes of the crisis and to work toward restoring lasting peace.
He warned that anyone found guilty of disturbing public peace in the state would face the full weight of the law.
“Life is sacred. You can’t just take someone’s life and expect God to be pleased,” he said. “My younger sister was shot at close range by a police escort who was in the same vehicle. The officer is currently being interrogated by the police.”
