A passenger aboard an American Airlines flight was removed earlier this week after clashing with a flight attendant during the pre-flight safety briefing, telling her to “shut up.”

The incident happened on Tuesday on a flight from Costa Rica to Dallas and was caught on camera, quickly going viral on Instagram. The video shows the passenger cutting off the safety announcement before bluntly telling the attendant to “shut up,” sparking a heated confrontation.

“Do you want to get off the plane? Because I don’t feel comfortable with you if you’re not going to follow instructions,” the attendant fired back, according to the clip.

The passenger later claimed she “couldn’t hear” the announcements, but the crew dismissed her excuse, insisting she wasn’t registered as hearing-impaired. The attendant then warned that the pilot would be asked to remove her for non-compliance.

The tension grew worse after the woman was also accused of refusing to switch off her phone. She was eventually escorted off the aircraft as other passengers looked on.

The viral video was shared by fellow traveler Jay Crenshaw, who joked, “Empty middle seat is a win for me.” Speaking later, Crenshaw said he could see both sides of the dispute: “She was clearly irritated and having a bad morning. The flight attendant might’ve caught a stray, but she knows she crossed the line.”

He added, “We’ve all had bad days and said things we regret — she just got caught on camera.”
