Kunle Afod Reveals Why He Took His Charity For Nollywood Legends To The Public

Actor and filmmaker Kunle Afod has opened up on why he chose to make his charity work for elderly Nollywood veterans public after keeping it private for years.

The 51-year-old revealed that he had long been quietly supporting aging colleagues who struggled outside the movie scene, offering both financial and emotional assistance. For him, reaching out to veterans had always been a personal mission—until he turned 50.

Afod explained that during his 50th birthday celebrations, he came across several social media comments accusing Nollywood stars of spending lavishly on parties while neglecting the pioneers who paved the way for the industry.

According to him, those remarks pushed him to begin showcasing his outreach publicly, not for showmanship, but to highlight the efforts being made to support the veterans.

He noted that going public has since drawn more encouragement and visibility to elderly actors who are often forgotten.

“When I turned 50, my comment section was filled with people saying: ‘They only know how to party, they don’t care for the old actors who laid the foundation.’ I said to myself, we’ve been doing this, but people don’t see it. That’s when I decided to make it public,” Afod said.

He added: “As God would have it, going public even helped the elderly ones more. That’s why I focus mainly on the veterans now. People said our veterans are suffering, so I’m committed to them.”
