According to residents, the attackers, armed with sophisticated weapons, struck in the early hours of Sunday, engaging community security volunteers in a prolonged gun battle. Despite putting up stiff resistance, the vigilantes were eventually overwhelmed.

Footage from the scene, obtained by SaharaReporters, captured the lifeless bodies of slain guards lying in pools of blood as grieving relatives and residents wailed in despair.

Community members lamented the recent withdrawal of soldiers who had previously been stationed in the area, arguing that their absence left locals vulnerable.

“We don’t know why they pulled out the soldiers. Now our people are exposed. About 10 were killed, and five taken away. The situation is terrible,” one resident told reporters.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s spokesperson, Rafiu Ajakaye, confirmed the incident, describing it as “devastating beyond words.” He noted, however, that casualty figures remained unclear, saying: “Three forest guards died, one was injured, but many of the attackers were also killed.”

The conflicting figures have added to rising tension in the community, with locals calling for urgent government and security intervention.

The attack in Oke-Ode comes just days after bandits struck Tsaragi in Edu Local Government Area, where they abducted a businessman, Suleiman Ndana, during a midnight raid. Ndana, who had recently opened a fuel station in Yana Kokonna, was reportedly targeted by the gunmen, who stormed his home and whisked him away after operating unchallenged.
