INEC Has Lost Credibility!’ – Oby Ezekwesili Drops Bombshell On Nigeria’s Electoral Body
Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has expressed deep concern that both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary have been compromised, stressing that they no longer enjoy the confidence of the Nigerian people.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s news programme on Thursday, Ezekwesili argued that Nigeria’s democracy is faltering because it has been gradually corrupted, leaving citizens powerless and disengaged from governance.
She explained that democracy in the country has been hijacked by powerful interests, while ordinary citizens have become increasingly sidelined in the political process. This, she said, has paved the way for state capture as institutions tasked with safeguarding democracy have instead been drawn into political manipulation.
“The INEC as an electoral umpire is compromised. They don’t have the trust of society. The judiciary has also engulfed itself in political shenanigans. When you have this kind of complex situation, you see the massive mess we have today,” Ezekwesili said.
She added that the gradual withdrawal of citizens from active participation reflects their loss of faith in the social contract, while globally, stakeholders are seeking ways to re-centre governance around citizens, insisting that freedom and inclusion are vital for innovation and progress.
