Reports indicate that the confrontation occurred at a military checkpoint where an argument ensued between personnel of both security agencies before the soldiers reportedly began shooting.

One of the policemen involved, who spoke to SaharaReporters, described how the situation escalated abruptly.

“We were returning from Anambra State election duty when we had a misunderstanding with some Army personnel at a checkpoint. Before we knew it, they opened fire on us,” he said.

He added that one officer was shot in the chest while several others sustained injuries.

“One of our men was hit directly in the chest, and many others were wounded. The situation has now turned into a riot, and we’ve called for backup,” he added.

A video from the scene shows chaos as security operatives scrambled for safety following the gunfire.

The incident occurred just hours after the conclusion of the November 8, 2025, governorship election in Anambra State, which saw a heavy deployment of security forces.

According to Naija News, over 45,000 police officers were deployed to maintain peace during the polls, which were won by incumbent Governor Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) with 422,664 votes. His closest rival, Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured 99,445 votes, while Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and John Nwosu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) scored 37,753 and 8,208 votes respectively.

Following the shooting, a riot reportedly broke out as police operatives called for reinforcements to the area.

As of press time, neither the Nigerian Army nor the Nigeria Police Force had issued an official statement regarding the incident.

The clash has heightened post-election tension in the state and raised concerns about coordination among security agencies during national assignments.
