Ex-Minister Sylva’s Family Besieged by EFCC, Tension Mounts In Maitama
Family members and children of former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and ex-Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, were reportedly left distressed at his Maitama, Abuja residence after security operatives surrounded the home, enforcing what amounted to a 24-hour siege.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Sylva, a prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) figure, is currently under investigation over alleged issues related to security and public finances—claims he has vehemently denied.
Earlier, speculation linked the former governor to an alleged coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s administration, an accusation both the Federal Government and the military have since officially dismissed. Despite these clarifications, the siege continued, raising concerns among his associates about the motives, procedures, and proportionality of the operation.
“Prior to these developments, the public was unsettled by baseless attempts to associate him with a supposed coup plot, allegations that have been categorically rejected by the government,” an aide noted.
During a dramatic October raid, Sylva’s residence was reportedly ransacked, with four aides and domestic staff arrested. Months on, the detainees—including ordinary household employees—remain in custody, with little public clarity, according to Sylva’s Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Julius Bokoru.
Bokoru condemned the emotional strain and uncertainty faced by the families, stressing that “while political battles rage, innocent households bear the brunt.” He identified those arrested in the October incursion as Musa Mohammed (Sylva’s driver), Ayuba Reuben, Friday Lusa Paul (escort driver), Sylva’s personal driver, and several unnamed domestic staff.
He described the toll of the detention, saying, “The most distressing aspect of this saga is not the swirl of speculation, but the silent suffering of ordinary men caught in the crossfire. Fathers, husbands, ordinary Nigerians, remain detained on grounds that are unclear and wholly vague to their traumatised families.”
Bokoru further noted that the siege and continued detention have persisted even after Sylva formally communicated his willingness to cooperate with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), with the only limitation being his ongoing treatment for a serious medical condition.
“This situation continues despite Chief Sylva writing to the EFCC to reaffirm his readiness to appear before the Commission on a mutually convenient date, subject only to his life-threatening health challenges,” he added.
