Bello made the announcement during a visit to the palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, where he met with traditional rulers, clerics and key stakeholders from the district. A video of the visit and his declaration was later shared on his verified Facebook page on Monday.
“I have accepted to run for the Senate in 2027,” Bello told the gathering.
The seat is currently held by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was elected in 2023 to represent Kogi Central in the 10th National Assembly. Her victory marked a milestone, as she became the first woman to serve as a senator from Kogi State.
Bello governed Kogi State from 2016 to 2024 and remains an influential figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Reacting to Bello’s ambition, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has said she is unfazed by the former governor’s entry into the race. Speaking on the Mic On Podcast, the lawmaker described herself as Bello’s political nightmare, insisting she has no reason to fear him.
“If I decide to contest and my name appears on the ballot alongside ex-Governor Yahaya Bello, I say bring it on. Afraid of who? He’s not my nightmare; I’m his political nightmare,” she said.
She also responded to allegations that Senate President Godswill Akpabio removed some of her constituency projects.
