In a statement issued by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, the management acknowledged that the death resulted from medical negligence at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano.

The Board disclosed that a preliminary investigation, initiated by the Executive Secretary, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, confirmed that surgical scissors were inadvertently left inside the patient after a previous operation.

Beyond the suspensions, the matter has been forwarded to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for a comprehensive investigation and appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with medical regulations and the law.

“The Board expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and shares in their grief over this tragic loss. We assure the public that any form of negligence will not be tolerated,” the statement read.

Speaking to Daily Trust, a relative of the deceased, Abubakar Mohammed, revealed that Umar had endured persistent abdominal pain for several months following a surgery performed at the facility in September 2025.

He explained that despite multiple visits to the hospital and complaints of worsening pain, her condition was allegedly overlooked, with doctors repeatedly prescribing painkillers.

“She had surgery at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in September. After that, she complained of severe abdominal pain for months,” Mohammed said.

“Whenever she returned to the hospital, she was given pain medication. It was only two days ago that scans were finally conducted, and that was when doctors discovered that scissors had been left inside her body.”
