He urged them to immediately stop providing any form of support—whether openly or secretly—to criminal groups that threaten national security.

Speaking during an official visit to Maiduguri on Wednesday, the Defence Minister emphasized that terrorism and banditry cannot be justified as expressions of regional, ethnic, or religious loyalty. He stressed that such excuses are dangerous and must never legitimize criminal behavior.

“A friend of a thief is a thief,” Musa declared, underscoring the importance of rejecting narratives that condone or excuse criminal activity.

His remarks appeared to directly address Sheikh Gumi, who had previously referred to forest bandits as “our brothers” and suggested society could not function without them. Musa clarified that while showing compassion for victims of violence is important, empathy must never cross into complicity.

He warned that such narratives only embolden criminal networks, which have devastated communities, displaced families, and claimed countless innocent lives. Musa also highlighted that terrorism relies not only on weapons but also on moral and rhetorical support.

“Those who defend, excuse, or shield criminals—whether through words, influence, or silence—must bear responsibility for the consequences of their actions,” he stated.

The Defence Minister concluded by stressing that Nigeria cannot effectively combat terrorism and banditry if lines between victims and perpetrators are blurred. He made it clear that neutrality is unacceptable in matters of national security, insisting that Nigerians must choose between standing with the law or enabling criminality.

“The choice is clear,” Musa said. “Stand with the law and the nation, or be counted among those enabling criminality.”
