Following more than 95 minutes of intense action, VAR controversies and missed chances that ended in a goalless draw, the contest was ultimately decided by the composure of the Nigerian goalkeeper. Nwabali pulled off two crucial saves during the shootout, sealing a hard-fought victory and a podium finish for Nigeria.
The third-place encounter was far from a routine playoff, as both sides played with urgency and pride in front of a vibrant crowd of 38,113 fans. Nigeria appeared to have broken the deadlock midway through the first half when Akor Adams headed home from close range after a slick attacking move. However, a VAR check ruled out the goal for a foul in the build-up, leaving the Super Eagles visibly frustrated.
Nigeria continued to press after the break, but another potential breakthrough was denied when Ademola Lookman’s goal was chalked off for offside. Egypt, meanwhile, remained dangerous on the counter, with Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush testing Nigeria’s defence.
The flow of the game was further disrupted by injuries and substitutions, including Semi Ajayi’s late exit. Despite tactical changes by coach Eric Chelle and several nervy moments at both ends, neither team managed to score in regulation or extra time, forcing the match into penalties.
Nigeria showed composure from the spot, with Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Akor Adams and Ademola Lookman converting their kicks. Egypt replied through Rami Rabia and Mahmoud Saber, but Nwabali proved decisive, denying Marmoush and then Mohamed Salah to the delight of Nigerian fans. Although Fisayo Dele-Bashiru missed his attempt, the goalkeeper’s heroics ensured Egypt could not capitalise.
Nwabali’s commanding performance not only delivered AFCON 2025 bronze for the Super Eagles but also earned him the Man of the Match award in the third-place playoff.
