He explained that their deployment was approved by the Federal Government and that they are in the country strictly for training and technological assistance.
Speaking with The Nation at the Ministry of Defence, Musa clarified that the American troops have been authorised to collaborate with Nigerian forces in parts of Bauchi State as part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and banditry.
The minister reiterated the Federal Government’s willingness to partner with friendly nations to strengthen the fight against insecurity. He noted that such military cooperation is not unusual, pointing out that Nigeria has also provided similar support to countries including Liberia, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and others.
General Musa stated that Nigeria stands to benefit from advanced U.S. technology, particularly drones and satellite systems, which are critical tools in tackling criminal activities.
“Yes, some of them are here and we are working together. I’m not aware of their presence in Borno, but I know they have permission to operate in certain areas of Bauchi to assist with training in our fight against terrorism,” he said.
“They will support us with technology. The U.S. has strong technological capabilities, including drones and satellite systems, which are very important to our operations.”
He added that international collaboration is common practice among nations and stressed that Nigeria now requires such support due to the growing security challenges, especially following instability in the Sahel region after the fall of Libya, which he said led to the proliferation of arms and criminal networks.
Musa assured Nigerians that the country’s sovereignty remains intact, emphasizing that the presence of American troops is guided by a clear agreement and is temporary.
“Everything we are doing is based on mutual agreement. They respect our sovereignty and understand the terms. Their stay is for a short period, and once the objective is achieved, they will leave,” he added.
