A senior government official in Akure disclosed that the governor left the state capital for Abuja on Thursday, a day after the unrest disrupted the party’s exercise on Wednesday.

The incident occurred as preparations were underway to mark Aiyedatiwa’s one-year anniversary in office.

According to the source, the governor departed for Abuja shortly after commissioning the Igoba and Alagbaka Extension roads, thereby cancelling the planned inauguration of a 100,000-litre water supply project at the Federal University of Technology, Akure Teaching Hospital Complex.

His deputy, Dr Olayide Adelami, represented him at the remaining anniversary activities.

“The summons was sent to the governor late Thursday following security briefings available to Mr President,” the source revealed.

“We were already preparing for the anniversary programmes when we received sudden notice that the governor would not be available the next day.”

The source further indicated that the President was reportedly displeased over the killings and sought clarification from the governor on the circumstances surrounding the violence, particularly given the absence of a strong opposition presence in the state.

Although it remains unclear whether Aiyedatiwa met directly with the President, he has since returned to Akure. President Tinubu has not issued an official statement on the matter.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened across parts of the state following the killing of the traditional ruler of Agamo Town, Oba Kehinde Jacob Faledun.

The monarch was reportedly abducted by suspected gunmen at about 7:10 p.m. on February 18, 2026, and later killed.

The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, led a delegation comprising the Commander of the 32 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Director of the Department of State Services to assess the situation in the affected community.

Preliminary findings indicate that about six masked armed men invaded the monarch’s residence, forcibly took him from his compound, and fatally attacked him.

Lawal assured residents that those responsible would be pursued and prosecuted.

He confirmed the immediate deployment of additional tactical units and security resources to the area and called on members of the public to provide credible information to support ongoing investigations.

The police commissioner emphasised that sustained collaboration between security agencies and residents remains essential to restoring and maintaining peace across Ondo State.
