Duru noted that in line with democratic principles, incumbents often enjoy an advantage when seeking re-election, especially if party members are satisfied with their performance. He added that the idea of a “right of first refusal” is based on performance and the need for political parties to present candidates who can effectively uphold their ideology and manifesto.

According to him, while consensus is likely, it does not exclude competition, as any interested member is welcome to participate in the race. He stressed that parties must prioritise credible and performing candidates, warning that presenting unpopular figures could cost them victory at the polls.

He also expressed personal support for allowing incumbents at all levels, including governors, to seek second terms, noting that such provisions are backed by the constitution. He added that this approach helps keep officeholders accountable, as their chances of re-election depend largely on their performance in office.
