This was disclosed by the Kano State Hisbah Board in a statement released to journalists on Friday, May 1, 2026.

Speaking on the development, the board’s Deputy Commander-General, Mujahedeen Aminudeen, revealed that preparations will begin with medical screening for about 3,000 intending couples ahead of the wedding ceremony.

He explained that the programme will involve 1,500 men and 1,500 women selected to participate, noting that the screening is aimed at determining their health status before marriage.

According to him, the tests will include checks for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, genotype compatibility, and drug use, all to ensure healthy unions and reduce future health risks among couples.

Aminudeen added that the initiative, organised by the Kano State Government, primarily targets less-privileged individuals, including widows, divorcees, and unmarried women.

He further disclosed that the government will support participants with both financial aid and essential household items. Each bride is expected to receive a bed set, including a mattress and pillows, along with ₦100,000 in cash to help start a small business after also receiving a ₦100,000 dowry from the state.

Participation in the medical screening is compulsory, and anyone who fails to take part will not be eligible for the programme.

The mass wedding scheme was originally introduced during the tenure of former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as part of efforts to assist vulnerable women and address social challenges in the state.
